The One Question I Ask Every Client

Before we dive into mood boards, paint charts, or furniture layouts, I always ask one simple question:

How do you want to feel in this space?

  • Not what colour do you want the walls?

  • Not what’s your style?

  • Not even what’s your budget?

But: How do you want to feel when you walk in the door?

Because that question unlocks everything.

Interior design is often treated like an aesthetic exercise—a game of choosing cushions, mixing metals, or jumping on the next big trend. And yes, all those things matter. But real design? The kind that makes you breathe deeper, slow down, light up, or exhale? That starts with emotion.

Do you want to feel calm? Like the world melts away the second you close the door behind you?
Do you want to feel energised? Ready to host, to work, to move through the space with intention?
Do you want to feel grounded? Safe, still, surrounded by things that have meaning?
Or maybe you want to feel playful, cosy, inspired, bold?

At Room Service, we let that emotional goal guide design.

If you want calm, we might soften the palette, simplify the layout, and focus on natural light, texture, and flow.

If you want energy, we’ll play with colour, rhythm, contrast. Maybe a checkerboard floor. Maybe bold art. Maybe a perfectly placed playlist moment (yes, speaker styling is a thing).

If you want grounding, we’ll focus on warm woods, tactile textiles, deeper tones, and familiar shapes. Pieces that feel like home.

Because when design starts with feeling, everything becomes easier. You’re not overwhelmed by endless options—you’re anchored in intention. It’s no longer “which chair is prettiest?” but “which chair supports the mood I want to create?”

It’s not about copying something you saw on Pinterest. It’s about creating a space that reflects who you are, how you live, and what you need. It’s design that meets you where you are—and lifts you just a little higher.

So the next time you think about redecorating, skip the swatches for a second. Sit in your space. Close your eyes. Ask yourself:

How do I want to feel here?

We’ll take it from there.
