Why Space Planning Is the Secret Ingredient to Good Design

When people think of hiring an interior designer, their mind usually jumps to colours, fabrics, and styling. Paint charts, velvet sofas, perfectly plumped cushions.

But here’s the truth: none of that matters if the bones of the room aren’t right. The secret to good design isn’t the colour on your walls — it’s the way your space is planned.

Space planning is the unglamorous cousin of interior design. It doesn’t look sexy on Instagram, but it’s the bit that makes everything else work. And honestly? It’s my favourite part of the job.

What is space planning, exactly?

In simple terms: it’s how you arrange and size everything in your space so that it flows. It’s the blueprint that dictates how you move around a room, where the furniture goes, and how the atmosphere feels.

Think of it as choreography. Done well, you glide effortlessly through a space. Done badly, you bump into coffee tables and wonder why the room never feels quite right.

Why it matters more than you think

  • Flow before finishes
The best design starts with function. If your layout is awkward, even the most beautiful wallpaper can’t save it. Space planning makes sure your home works as hard as it looks.

  • Avoiding costly mistakes
Ever bought a sofa that looked dreamy in the showroom… only to find it swallows your entire living room? Or a rug that looks like a postage stamp when you roll it out? Proper planning prevents these (all too common) mistakes.

  • Small spaces feel bigger
When you maximise every square metre, small rooms suddenly feel generous. It’s not magic — it’s just smart design.

  • Future-proofing your home
Space planning isn’t just about today. It’s about anticipating how you’ll live in your home in five years. Maybe that means allowing for a growing family, or carving out a future home office.

Real-life example

One of my clients had a gorgeous, large bedroom — but it only had one window, and the layout made it feel dark and awkward. By rethinking where the bed sat, adding storage into “dead space” corners, and introducing mirrors to bounce light, the whole room shifted from gloomy to inviting.

No paint colour could have achieved that on its own. It was the layout that changed everything.

Why it’s my favourite part of design

Because it’s where creativity meets problem-solving. You can have all the Pinterest boards in the world, but until the space works, you’ll never feel at home in it.

When I’m sketching floor plans and playing with layouts, I’m thinking about how you’ll use the room: where you’ll put your morning coffee, how light will fall when you’re reading, how your friends will gather around the dining table.

That’s the bit that excites me most — design that makes your everyday life smoother, calmer, more enjoyable.

The takeaway

Beautiful design isn’t just about pretty finishes. It’s about creating a home that feels effortless to live in. And that starts with space planning.

If you get the bones right, everything else will follow.
